Books I Want to Read in December

I absolutely love reading. I have since I was a young child. But the thing about being full-time (and over-time, if I’m being honest) in college is that you don’t really have any extra reading time. And the thing about being full-time in college as an adult is that each and every minute dedicated to classwork and homework is very valuable. But my semester just ended and I’m really excited to make some headway into my TBR pile. I go back on January 6 so that gives me about 30 days to make a dent.

1) Atlas of the Heart – Brene Brown

The first one I want to read came as a recommendation from a professor of mine. She played a clip of the audiobook in class and I was so intrigued, I bought my own hardcopy as soon as I was able to. This is supposed to be a comprehensive list of emotions that we as humans feel, though most of us don’t know them by name. As a would-be psychologist, I think this is going to be hugely impactful for my career and future patients, so I am definitely excited for it!

2) The Shadow Work Journal – Keila Shaheen

One thing I stand firmly on is that I believe that you have to confront triggers in order to heal from your traumas. And let’s face it, we live in a world where traumas are way too commonplace. I did not find this through TikTok, but I did hear it was an overnight sensation! My plan is to have a separate journal to complete the prompts so I don’t have to write in the book and I can work through it again whenever I need to.

3/4) The Four Elements/Companion Book – Don Miguel Ruiz

I have the book and the companion book, both. I’m super excited to see how Toltec wisdom can improve my life and the way I think about things. Don Miguel Ruiz was an author recommendation from a former boss who thought that The Four Elements could help me in the position I held.

5) The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho

This book came as a recommendation from several patients who saw me start (and not finish) The Four Elements. They said it could also help me along my journey of wanting peace and freedom from overthinking.

I will be posting reviews of all five of these as I complete them. I’m excited to see what knowledge and wisdom they hold. I’m a chronic overthinker (yay anxiety!!) and I would love to be able to break that habit once and for all.

Until next time,

-Katie
